Day 1 – MUMBAI (Maharashtra)

Namaste! Welcome to Mumbai, the bustling capital of Maharashtra, which is one of India’s most dynamic and diverse cities. Located on the western coast of India along the Arabian Sea, Mumbai is known as the “City of Dreams,” where people from all walks of life come to pursue their ambitions. It is a city, like India itself, full of contrasts and diversity, where colonial architecture and ancient temples stand beside modern skyscrapers, and tradition meets global trends at every turn. It is a melting pot of languages, religions, and communities, all living together in a fast-paced but spirited environment. Whether you’re enjoying a walk along Marine Drive, a tasty snack at a local café, or shopping at Colaba Causeway, Mumbai never runs out of things to offer. Mumbai is more than a city – it’s an experience. With its historical significance, economic might, cultural diversity, and openness to modern lifestyles, including veganism, it continues to evolve while staying true to its spirit. Whether you’re drawn by ambition, creativity, or simply the energy of city life, Mumbai welcomes all with open arms and endless possibilities. Mumbai is synonymous with Bollywood, India’s thriving film industry. It produces more films annually than Hollywood and attracts aspiring actors, directors, and writers from all over the country. But the city’s cultural offerings don’t stop at the cinema. Mumbai has a rich theatre tradition, an active music scene, art galleries, and literary festivals that make it a hub for creative expression. Food is a central part of Mumbai’s cultural identity. The city offers everything from snacks like vada pav and pav bhaji to high-end international cuisine. In recent years, Mumbai has also embraced global food trends, and you can find almost every type of cuisine around the world here. Our Adventure begins here – in Mumbai the vibrant Capital of Maharashtra, where we will start with our orientation meeting and light local vegan snacks before setting out into the streets of this ancient capital for a delicious feast and your first official taste of India – at one of the city’s oldest (and tastiest) Indo-Chinese cuisine restaurants. So tonight, please make sure you bring your appetite and be ready to eat!

The caves were built in two phases: The earliest caves date back to the 2nd century BCE (Satavahana period). The later caves were developed around the 5th to 6th centuries CE  under the patronage of Emperor Harishena. The Ajanta Caves were created as monasteries (viharas) and prayer halls (chaityas) for Buddhist monks. They served both as retreats for meditation and places for spreading Buddhist teachings. From seasonal fruits to local vegan delicacies like idlis, poha, and dairy-free chutneys, this meal sets the tone for a day focused on health, culture, and compassion. After breakfast, we embark on a special visit to a well-regarded hospitality and hotel management school, where the next generation of chefs and service professionals is being trained. On arrival, we are warmly greeted by the hospitality students, who are excited to welcome us and share insights into their world. This is a unique opportunity to engage with young, passionate individuals who are not only studying hospitality but also exploring the growing role of veganism in the food and service industries, based on a special program the VegVoyages Foundation has developed with the Animal, Climate, Health Save India Foundation. The interaction is informal yet insightful, as the students speak about their experiences with plant-based cuisine, how the concept of veganism is growing in India, and how it is being integrated into their curriculum. Next, we transition into the vegan cooking class, led by talented student chefs. Together, we’ll explore the diversity of Indian vegan cooking, preparing an array of regional dishes using fresh, plant-based ingredients. Whether it’s crafting a rich lentil dal, rolling out soft whole-wheat rotis, or experimenting with dairy-free versions of classic Indian sweets, this hands-on experience is both fun and educational. After the class, we’ll sit down to enjoy the fruits of our labor with a shared vegan lunch, made entirely by you and your fellow participants. It’s a joyful, communal meal filled with conversation, laughter, and the satisfaction of creating something delicious, healthy, and cruelty-free together.

Following lunch, we’ll return to our hotel, where you’ll have time to freshen up and relax. As the evening sets in, we join a local vegan family for a special evening of plant-based dishes and drinks for dinner. Located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, Bandhavgarh National Park is a treasure trove of biodiversity and one of the most celebrated wildlife destinations in India. Covering an area of over 1,500 square kilometers (including buffer zones), Bandhavgarh is especially renowned for having one of the highest densities of Royal Bengal Tigers in the world. Beyond tigers, the park is home to leopards, sloth bears, deer, wild boars, and over 250 species of birds, making it a paradise for wildlife lovers and photographers alike. Day 12 – VARANASI (Uttar Pradesh)

The day begins with a wholesome vegan breakfast at the palace, enjoyed amidst royal elegance and peaceful surroundings. After, it’s time to bid farewell to Baghel Palace and the state of Madhya Pradesh, and embark on the next chapter of our journey – a voyage to one of the oldest living cities in the world, Varanasi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Also known as Kashi or Benares, Varanasi is a city that transcends time. Located on the banks of the sacred Ganges River in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi is considered the spiritual heart of India. With a history dating back over 3,000 years, it is a city of temples, scholars, mystics, and pilgrims – a place where life and death coexist in sacred harmony. According to Hindu mythology, Varanasi was founded by Lord Shiva himself. For centuries, it has drawn seekers and sages, poets and philosophers, all in search of divine truth. The city’s narrow lanes are filled with vibrant colors, the scent of incense, the sound of temple bells, and the continuous chant of mantras – all blending into a spiritual symphony that is uniquely Varanasi.

Upon arrival at Namo Ghat Jetty, our journey takes on a magical tone. From here, we’ll board a traditional boat that glides along the Ganges, offering your first views of Varanasi’s iconic ghats – long stone steps that lead into the river, bustling with ritual and daily life. You’ll be welcomed at your riverside hotel, where a private lunch is served in the hotel’s elegant dining hall, offering a comforting pause and a moment to refresh. After a late lunch and a brief rest, the afternoon brings you closer to the living history of Varanasi with a Heritage Walk. Led by a longtime local resident, we’ll explore ancient neighbourhoods, hidden shrines, artisanal workshops, and vibrant markets. This intimate experience offers an unfiltered glimpse into the everyday rhythm of life in one of the world’s oldest cities. As dusk approaches, prepare for one of the most spiritually captivating experiences of your journey: the Ganga Aarti Ceremony. This sacred ritual is viewed from the river itself, aboard a boat gently coasting in the water. As priests perform the ritual with flaming lamps, rhythmic chants, and temple bells, the Ganges reflects the golden light of devotion. Witnessing this from the river creates a sense of awe and stillness – a moment suspended between heaven and earth. After the ceremony, we’ll return to our hotel for a relaxing evening where we’ll gather for drinks and a delicious vegan dinner. It’s a time to unwind, reflect on the spiritual energy of Varanasi, and enjoy the comfort of good food and company. From sacred rituals to centuries-old streets, our first day in Varanasi introduces us to its profound soul — a city that invites both travellers and seekers of meaning.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Begin our day with a serene and nourishing vegan breakfast in royal surroundings before departing Baghel Palace.
  • Travel to one of the world’s oldest living cities — Varanasi, also known as Kashi and Banares – the spiritual heart of India.
  • Arrive at Namo Ghat Jetty and glide along the Ganges by traditional boat, catching glimpses of Varanasi’s sacred ghats.

Day 13 – VARANASI (Uttar Pradesh)

After a hearty vegan breakfast at our heritage hotel, we’ll board a traditional boat from our riverside residence and cruise along the sacred Ganges to Namo Ghat, where our spiritual journey continues toward one of the most historically significant Buddhist sites in the world, Sarnath, which is also one of its 4 sacred pilgrimage sites. Sarnath is the revered site where Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, setting in motion what is known as the Wheel of Dharma. The serene atmosphere, ancient stupas, and living spiritual traditions make it a profound place for reflection and learning. Upon arrival, we’ll be welcomed by monks and practitioners who will introduce us to their temple and school, where we’ll explore with them the Buddhist Temple and Monastery Grounds, and they will introduce us to the core principles of Buddhism emphasizing right conduct, mindfulness, compassion, and inner peace, to help us understand Sarnath’s importance in Buddhist history. Next, we’ll move on to a peaceful ancient space within the site for a guided meditation session, allowing time to internalize the morning’s teachings and Sarnath’s historical significance in quiet stillness. Buddhist monks typically follow a rule called vikāla bhojana, which means refraining from eating at inappropriate times. According to this precept, monks eat only between sunrise and noon (typically finishing by 12:00 PM) and do not eat solid food after noon until the following sunrise. At 11:00 AM, we’ll share a special First Precepts Lunch with the monks — a plant-based, humble meal prepared in the spirit of mindfulness and simplicity. After a day of insight and cultural immersion, we’ll return to the hotel by boat, passing once again through the vibrant life of the Ganges. As the sun sets over this ancient city, and sadly over our journey as well, as this is our last night in India together, we’ll gather for drinks and a special vegan farewell dinner.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Start our final day with a nourishing vegan breakfast at the hotel, set amidst tranquillity and intention.
  • Explore the revered site where Buddha gave his first sermon and receive a special peaceful blessing from monks at the temple and school.
  • Engage in a quiet, reflective meditation session within the serene grounds of one of the 4 sacred pilgrimage sites in Buddhism.
  • Share a humble, plant-based meal with the monastic community, in alignment with their ancient discipline of vikāla bhojana.
  • Gather for final drinks and a lovingly prepared vegan dinner, celebrating meaningful connections and the journey’s many moments together.
