Serendipity Sri Lanka MapVegan tour to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is often portrayed by travelogues and tourist brochures as an island paradise with images of its postcard-picture-perfect palm-fringed sandy beaches and clear blue waters. And yes, it does have those – but this small island-nation located as a teardrop off the southeast coast of India is so very, very much more than that.

Imagine a country smaller than Ireland, but with almost 5 times the amount of people, who together make up not less than 20 different ethnic groups speaking 2 official national languages, with 3 commonly spoken languages along with a wide array of other dialects and creole languages. A country that is not only home to the majority Sinhalese, but also home to Sri Lankan Tamils, Tamils of recent Indian Origin, Dutch Burghers, Portuguese Burghers, Muslim Moors, Malay, Javanese, Colombo Chetties, Veddas, and Coastal Veddas, Parsis, Sindhis, Chinese, Bohras, Memons, Bharata people, and many more who have all called these shores their home for generations, if not centuries, and in some cases over a millennium.

Attracted by those fleeing persecution, or lured by its rich natural resources and the better life these resources promised, Sri Lanka has been an important hub of trade along the historically important trading routes. It has attracted seekers and preachers of spiritual enlightenment, missionaries, the usual gamut of opportunists and profiteers – the key colonialist players among them, who all took refuge on Sri Lanka’s shores, into its foothills and up into mountains. Collectively, they have all influenced and created this culturally rich, spiritually manifested, and the vibrantly diverse island nation. Despite its four centuries of colonial rule that has exacerbated old divisions that the country still struggles to overcome, the relatively recent coined “Sri Lankan – Our Identity, Diversity – Our Strength” is a telling sign of the road ahead.

Join Vegan Travel Asia by VegVoyages on a personal journey that is over a decade in the making, about a story that’s over 3,000 years old, as we journey to the incredible Island of Serendib. And yes, there will be sandy beaches. But there are also lush wildlife-rich jungles and savannah-like plains, ancient cities with centuries-old but still very much alive Buddhist and Hindu temples and ruins, well off-the-beaten-track villages, bustling bazaars, overflowing veggie and fresh fruit markets, and mouthwatering cuisines and magnificent living monuments. Most of all, there is a kaleidoscope of cultures all equally rich in traditions, rituals, and thought, which are preserved in their living customs and way of life today. And then there are the tragedies, trials, and triumphs of a turbulent, but surviving history that also lingers to this day. This is Sri Lanka’s story – alive and moving forward as it has for centuries, on the Island of Serendib.

On Vegan Travel Asia by VegVoyages vegan tour in Sri Lanka, get ready to head off-the-beaten-path! Join us as guests of our friends and their families, local activists, artists, conservationists, educators, students, chefs, filmmakers, and local communities as we delve into the heart of Sri Lanka’s story – and of course, taste our way through the varieties of the island’s delicious cuisines – all 100% veganized, especially for you.

Day 1 – COLOMBO

Lanka Map Ancient Trade Routes

Ayubowan, Vanakkam, and welcome to Colombo – a city that has always lived with one ear turned toward the sea. Long before skyscrapers and scooters, this was a port of call on the old ocean highways, a place where sailors came in tired, where merchants counted spices and stones, and where news from far-off worlds arrived on the wind. Sri Lanka sits right in the middle of the Indian Ocean’s ancient trading routes, and Colombo grew up around that advantage: natural harbors, easy access inland, and the kind of resources that once made empires hungry – cinnamon, pepper, gems, elephants, ivory, fresh water, food for the next leg of a journey. Even the city’s many name-stories feel like something passed down at a harbor tavern: leafy mango trees, a river crossing, a port called “Kolamba,” a Portuguese twist, and the odd suggestion of doves so common they left their mark on a Dutch coat of arms. Today begins with a special vegan breakfast, followed by our orientation meeting, where we’ll discuss the journey ahead: not just places on a map, but the layers of people and histories that have shaped the island. Sri Lanka may be small, but it holds a remarkable density of cultures and languages, communities that arrived for trade, for refuge, for opportunity, and stayed long enough to become part of the fabric.

In the afternoon, we visit a quiet temple where the International Buddhist Flag was first raised, and take time for a short meditation.

Later, we explore Old Colombo on a heritage walk, ending at Galle Face Green by the ocean, where the city gathers at sunset. After returning to Mount Lavinia to freshen up, we close the day with a vegan dinner and conversations with local creatives, activists, and community leaders.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Detailed Orientation Meeting where you will get to know your fellow travelers and adventure leaders better as we discuss the adventure ahead and have our Introduction to Sri Lanka’s History, Cultures, and Diversity Presentation.
  • Traditional Sri Lankan Dutch Burgher “lamprais” lunch (specially veganized just for us) accompanied by refreshing homemade ginger beer.
  • Join our friend and longtime resident of the city as we explore the back streets and back alleys of old Colombo.
  • Guests of monks at one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the city, and the site of the first hoisting of the International Flag of Buddhism.
  • Join our friends – local artists, filmmakers, and activists for a delicious vegan dinner.
  • A seaside sunset stroll along Colombo’s most popular family sunset gathering spot.

Vegan Meals Included Today: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

“Where do I start? The Vegan Travel Asia (VegVoyages) inaugural trip to Sri Lanka in 2019 “Finding Serendipity on the Island of Serendib” was beyond amazing. I got back just over a month ago and I know the experiences I had on this trip will be forever in my memory. I’m not a first-time Vegan Travel Asia (VegVoyages) traveler, this was my 7th (yes, 7th) trip with VegVoyages. Yes, I’m addicted. No other trip will provide you with ventures off the beaten path and instill in you the history, politics, religion, culture, and customs of a country. Daily language lessons help you learn basic words you need to help communicate in the country you are visiting. This isn’t a cookie-cutter tour of a country. You immerse yourself in the country, you meet locals, and you give back. Our first few days in Colombo were spent visiting a local vegan café, learning about the reconciliation efforts post-civil war through film, visiting temples to learn the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka to enjoying a vegan meet-up dinner with local vegans. Venturing north, we made our way to an area where tourism was off-limits until 2016. Switching gears and learning Tamil words instead of Sinhalese we were guests of the Theater Action Group which takes their street theater to local villages to help people heal and let them talk about their issues. Seeing a Hindu festival firsthand in Jaffna where self-mortification brings the devotees closer to their religion was an experience that I’ll never forget. Moving on to the forests of Sri Lanka we were able to help out local school kids and clean up the school grounds the day before they started their school year. We were also able to help fund their trip to Colombo to visit the natural history museum. We hiked to the top of Sigiriya Rock where the ruins of a former king’s palace is still present. The elephants! Who else gets to see Asian elephants in the wild and be joined by an elephant veterinarian who is on the front lines of the elephant-human conflict in Sri Lanka helping to educate people on how to live peacefully with these majestic beings. We ventured east to the coast and our snorkeling mission had two goals – see amazing fish and reefs, but also help with the clean-up of trash on the reef. Vegan Travel Asia (VegVoyages) is also funding buoys so that boats have a place to anchor instead of anchoring to reefs and causing further damage. After our second day of snorkeling, we were joined by hotel staff, police, military, and school kids to do a beach clean-up. We picked up over 245kg of trash in under 2 hours. This effort will continue as VegVoyages has sponsored further cleanups that locals will keep doing. On to Kandy where we were guests of a Kandyan dance school and were able to see amazing performances of this traditional dance. And yes, we got a bit of a dance lesson too! Visiting a tea plantation and learning about the sordid and difficult lives of tea plantation workers who were brought from South India by the British. Visiting temples, both Buddhist and Hindu showed the true diversity of this island nation. The experiences we had will stay with me always and I’ll be back to Sri Lanka someday. The country touched me so much and I have more to see. Sri Lanka is still healing from their 26-year civil war which ended in 2009. The people of Sri Lanka were kind, gracious and so welcoming of our group of travelers. From taking us into their homes to feed us, to chefs creating amazing vegan meals (which was completely new to them), the food was delicious beyond belief. On every trip, I meet new friends, friends who I will travel with again. This is the experience you have on a Vegan Travel Asia (VegVoyages) trip, the amazing, unique, and incredible experience as the story of a country is shared from all angles. I am an addict, I fully admit it. If you want a fully vegan, amazing adventure, look no further than Vegan Travel Asia by VegVoyages. Sri Lanka is now my favorite of the 7 trips I have done. Nepal is calling me for 2020!”

Day 2 – ANURADHAPURA

After breakfast, we leave the bustle of Colombo behind and begin our journey north to Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s most significant historical landscapes. As the city gradually fades, the scenery shifts—busy streets give way to open countryside, coconut groves, paddy fields, and small villages where life moves at an unhurried pace. Along the way, we’ll pause for a vegan lunch before continuing deeper into the island’s dry-zone heartland. By afternoon, we arrive in Anuradhapura, the ancient capital that shaped much of Sri Lanka’s history.

Founded over two thousand years ago, Anuradhapura flourished for nearly 1,300 years as the island’s political and spiritual center, becoming one of the great capitals of the ancient world. It was here, in the 3rd century BCE, that Theravada Buddhism firmly took root. The monk Mahinda, son of Emperor Ashoka of India, introduced the Buddha’s teachings to King Devanampiya Tissa. Soon after, Mahinda’s sister Sanghamitta arrived carrying a sacred sapling of the Bodhi Tree from Bodh Gaya—the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. That sapling was planted here and still survives today as the Sri Maha Bodhi, believed to be the oldest recorded tree intentionally planted by humans.

In the late afternoon, we step outside our heritage hotel for a gentle walk through the quiet forests and gardens surrounding the ancient city. Anuradhapura is dotted with sacred tanks, monastery ruins, and woodland groves that support a surprising diversity of wildlife. With a local naturalist, we follow shaded paths where peacocks call beneath the treetops, parakeets flash bright green across the sky, and bee-eaters and kingfishers dart between branches. Gray langur monkeys play in the canopy, giant squirrels leap between trees, and the occasional monitor lizard basks near the water. The landscape is rich with tamarind, neem, palu, and towering sacred fig trees, their broad canopies offering shade much as they did for monks and pilgrims centuries ago.

As dusk settles, we return to our heritage inn for a dinner of fresh vegan dishes, accompanied by ginger beer and fresh lime sodas, in the quiet atmosphere of a place where history and nature continue to exist side by side.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Vegan breakfast feast of traditional dishes overlooking the sea.
  • Guided nature walk through the forests that surround the monastery ruins, and ancient gardens of Anuradhapura, where peacocks, parakeets, langur monkeys, giant squirrels, and monitor lizards thrive among sacred fig, tamarind, and neem trees.
  • Special vegan rice and curry meal – Anuradhapura style!

Vegan Meals Included Today: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 3 – ANURADHAPURA

The day begins quietly among the living ruins of Anuradhapura—a landscape where history and nature have coexisted for more than two thousand years. After breakfast, we set out toward one of the ancient city’s most striking monuments: the Jetavanaramaya Stupa, rising above the treetops like a vast earthen mountain. Built in the 3rd century CE by King Mahasena, it was once among the tallest structures in the ancient world and remains one of the most impressive achievements of early Sri Lankan civilization. As we walk around its immense brick base with a local monk and novice students, stories unfold of the ancient capital—how Anuradhapura thrived for over a millennium as a center of royal power, advanced irrigation, and monastic life.

From the sacred city, we shift our focus to the surrounding landscape, where conservation and community life intersect. Nearby, we visit a bio-fence project co-created by Vegan Travel Asia in partnership with the Elephant Human Coexistence Foundation and RARE. Developed as part of a carbon-offset and wildlife coexistence initiative, the project highlights the realities of living alongside Sri Lanka’s wild elephants and the challenges farmers face as shrinking habitats bring wildlife and agriculture into closer contact. Instead of electric fencing, it promotes natural living barriers and community-based solutions that support peaceful coexistence. Here, conservationists share their work, and there may be an opportunity to take part in small activities that support local education and conservation efforts.

After a relaxed vegan lunch and time to refresh, the late afternoon draws us back into the sacred heart of the ancient city. At the Sri Maha Bodhi Temple, monks introduce us to the revered Bodhi tree, believed to descend from the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment and brought to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE by Sanghamitta Theri. From here, we begin to explore the traditions of Theravada Buddhism, the world’s oldest continuous school of Buddhist practice. Walking past the columns of Lovamahapaya, once a great monastic complex, we continue to the luminous white dome of Ruwanwelisaya Stupa. As evening settles, the day concludes with a gentle introduction to mindfulness meditation and a traditional blessing led by the monks.

Back at our heritage inn, we enjoy a peaceful dinner of fresh vegan cuisine, surrounded by the quiet atmosphere of a place where history still feels very much alive.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Vegan breakfast feast of traditional dishes.
  • Explore Jetavanaramaya Stupa – Walk around one of the largest brick structures ever built in the ancient world with a local monk, learning about Anuradhapura’s history as a powerful ancient capital and center of monastic life.
  • Visit an important bio-fence project where we’ll learn about the conservation initiative co-created by Vegan Travel Asia with the Elephant Human Coexistence Foundation and RARE, supporting carbon-offset efforts and promoting practical solutions for human–elephant coexistence.

Day 4 – JAFFNA

The morning begins with a relaxed breakfast at our heritage hotel in Anuradhapura before we set out north toward the Jaffna Peninsula. The journey itself reveals another side of Sri Lanka. Following the historic A9 highway—the island’s main north–south lifeline—we pass through dry-zone forests, small villages, and wide stretches of farmland dotted with ancient irrigation tanks built by early kings. As we move farther north, the landscape gradually shifts. Palmyra palms begin to rise above the flat horizon—a defining symbol of the Tamil north and a tree deeply woven into the region’s culture and daily life.

By early afternoon, we arrive in Jaffna, the cultural heart of Sri Lankan Tamil life. Located less than fifty kilometers from India across the Palk Strait, Jaffna has long been a center of Tamil language, religion, and scholarship. For centuries, it served as the capital of the Jaffna Kingdom, which flourished until the arrival of Portuguese colonial forces in the early 17th century.

In more recent decades, Jaffna was deeply affected by Sri Lanka’s civil war (1983–2009). The city became a stronghold of the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) and changed hands between the LTTE, the Sri Lankan military, and the Indian Peacekeeping Force. Years of conflict, sieges, and displacement left lasting impacts on the region and its people. Since the war ended in 2009, however, Jaffna has been steadily rebuilding, with returning families, restored institutions, and a gradual reopening to visitors.

After settling in and enjoying a welcoming vegan lunch, we head out to explore the city. At the local market, colorful stalls overflow with chilies, vegetables, spices, and palmyra products, while bicycles weave through the lively streets. We visit the beautifully restored Jaffna Public Library—once one of South Asia’s finest—damaged during the conflict in 1981 and later rebuilt as a powerful symbol of resilience.

Nearby, St. Mary’s Cathedral reflects the region’s diverse religious traditions. We then visit a Hindu temple to quietly observe aarti, the evening ritual of lamps, bells, and devotional prayer.

The day ends with a traditional vegan dinner served on banana leaves as guests of a local family. Here, we experience the bold, distinctive flavors of Jaffna cuisine, accompanied by local beers and Sri Lanka’s coconut spirit, arrack, before returning to the hotel for a restful night.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Scenic journey North as we travel through Sri Lanka’s dry-zone countryside, passing ancient irrigation tanks, rural villages, and forests as the landscape gradually shifts toward the palmyra-lined plains of the Jaffna Peninsula.
  • Introduction by our local friends to the cultural capital of Sri Lankan Tamils, where we’ll learn about the region’s long history, from the era of the Jaffna Kingdom to the impact of Sri Lanka’s civil war and the city’s gradual rebuilding since 2009.
  • Explore Jaffna’s local market and library, where we’ll experience everyday life in the peninsula’s bustling market and visit the restored Jaffna Public Library, once one of South Asia’s finest libraries and today a symbol of cultural resilience.
  • Visit a Hindu temple to quietly observe aarthi, the evening ritual of lamps, bells, and devotional prayer, and learn about Tamil Hindu temple architecture and traditions.
  • Enjoy a traditional banana leaf vegan meal hosted by a local family, tasting the bold flavors of Jaffna cuisine alongside local beer and Sri Lanka’s coconut spirit, arrack.

Day 5 – JAFFNA

The morning begins with a classic Jaffna-style breakfast—a simple yet deeply satisfying spread of crisp thosai, steaming sambar, coconut chutneys, and lightly spiced vegetable curries. These flavors reflect the culinary traditions of Sri Lanka’s Tamil north: aromatic, vibrant, and shaped by generations of home cooking.

After breakfast, we make our way to the Theatre Action Group (TAG) campus in the heart of Jaffna. This remarkable grassroots arts organization has played an important role in the cultural and emotional rebuilding of the Northern Province following decades of civil conflict. During Sri Lanka’s civil war (1983–2009), communities across the north experienced displacement, violence, and social upheaval. In the years since, TAG has created spaces where people—especially young people—can reconnect with culture, creativity, and community through the performing arts.

At TAG, we spend the morning with students and teachers exploring Tamil cultural traditions through music, dance, and storytelling. One of the most fascinating forms we encounter is Koothu, an ancient Tamil folk theatre that blends dramatic narration, rhythmic drumming, expressive movement, and vibrant costumes. Traditionally performed by traveling artists, Koothu carried stories from village to village, offering not only entertainment but also moral lessons, social commentary, and news of the wider world. Although modern media has pushed many such traditions to the margins, dedicated artists and educators continue to preserve and revive this unique art form.

After the morning’s activities, we share a banana leaf vegan lunch with the students and teachers, enjoying the bold and distinctive flavors of Jaffna cuisine.

The late afternoon is free to relax back at the hotel—perhaps with a swim or some quiet time—before returning to TAG for an evening performance open to the local community. As night settles over the peninsula, the day concludes with a home-cooked vegan dinner hosted by the founders of the Theatre Action Group, where stories, food, and hospitality are shared before returning to the hotel for a restful evening.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Join the teachers, artists, and students of the Theater Action Group (TAG) for a full-day program where they’ll share with us their unique cultural arts, music, dance, and healing theater that helps people and communities heal through the wonderful art of interactive street theater.
  • Enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan Tamil vegan meal together with members of TAG.
  • As guests of the TAG, we’ll learn about the inspirational work they do that structures participants from all ages and segments of society, with a special focus on women who have been particularly affected by decades of tragic events in the north of Sri Lanka, to come out of their workshops having gained greater self-esteem and confidence to revamp their future. Many have compared their programs to “interventions” where their counseling is played out through interactive games and theater to bring about the healing process.
  • Participate with Theatre Action Group on a cultural interactive performance with drums, songs, and street theater in a village, with the focus of the program to enable people to articulate their emotions in a supportive and safe community environment.
  • Tasty home-cooked vegan dinner with our friends after a long day’s work.

Day 6 – LAKSIRIGAMA & ELEPHANT CONSERVATION PROGRAM

Leaving Jaffna and the northern peninsula behind, we begin our journey south along Sri Lanka’s historic A9 highway—the island’s main lifeline connecting north and south. This road has witnessed centuries of movement: ancient traders and pilgrims, colonial caravans, and, more recently, the events of Sri Lanka’s civil war. Today, it once again carries travelers through landscapes returning to quieter rhythms of village life, agriculture, and forest.

As we travel inland, the scenery gradually transforms. The palmyra palms of the north give way to greener countryside and stretches of dry-zone evergreen forest—one of the island’s most important wildlife habitats. Though small in size, Sri Lanka is rich in biodiversity, home to over 500 species of birds, numerous reptiles and amphibians, and more than a hundred species of mammals. Along the way, flashes of color from kingfishers and bee-eaters cross the road, while monkeys watch from beneath the shade of roadside trees.

By midday, we arrive in Laksirigama, a quiet village near forest and wildlife reserves. Here, we settle into a charming eco-lodge nestled at the forest’s edge, where comfortable bungalows sit among the trees and the sounds of wind, birds, and rustling leaves replace the noise of the road. After lunch, there is time to unwind, settle into our rooms, and enjoy the calm of the surrounding jungle.

Later in the afternoon, we head out to explore one of Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary landmarks—Sigiriya Rock. Rising nearly 200 meters above the surrounding plains, this ancient rock fortress was built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As we walk around its base—and, for those who wish, climb to the summit—we encounter the remains of sophisticated water gardens, ancient reservoirs, and pathways that once formed part of a royal citadel, all set against sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.

As evening settles over the forest, we return to our jungle lodge. The day ends with a delicious vegan dinner, accompanied by the quiet sounds of the wilderness and a preview of our deeper exploration into Sri Lanka’s wildlife-rich forests tomorrow!

Highlights of the Day:

  • Traditional Taste of Jaffna breakfast specially veganized for us.
  • Introduction Program to the Plight of Sri Lanka’s Pachyderms from one of the
leading elephant conservationists on the island.
  • Sunset hike to the top of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sigiriya Rock fort, the spectacular 5th-century rock fortress of King Kashyapa, discovering ancient water gardens, reservoirs, and the remains of a royal citadel while enjoying sweeping views across the surrounding plains.
  • Special local vegan feast for dinner.

Day 7 – LAKSIRIGAMA & ELEPHANT CONSERVATION PROGRAM

The day begins early, just as the first light filters through the forest canopy. At dawn, we set out on a gentle birdwatching walk through the woodland surrounding our lodge, where the jungle slowly wakes to a chorus of calls and movement. Sri Lanka is one of Asia’s richest bird habitats, home to more than 500 recorded species, including many found nowhere else in the world. Along the trails, we may spot colorful bee-eaters, kingfishers, barbets, drongos, and parakeets, while monkeys move quietly through the trees, and the forest floor stirs with smaller wildlife.

After returning for a relaxed vegan breakfast, the morning turns toward one of the most important wildlife issues facing Sri Lanka today: human–elephant coexistence. Asian elephants once roamed across much of South and Southeast Asia, but their numbers have declined dramatically over the past century. In Sri Lanka, where both people and elephants share a relatively small island, the challenge of living side by side has become one of the country’s most pressing conservation issues. During a field visit and discussion with the leading voice of elephants in the country, Panchali, we’ll learn about the realities facing rural communities and the efforts underway to transform human–elephant conflict into human-elephant coexistence. Habitat loss, expanding agriculture, and fragmented forests often bring elephants and people into close contact, sometimes with tragic consequences for both. Innovative projects, such as the one we visited in Anuradhapura, are now focusing on community-led solutions, habitat protection, and awareness programs that allow both farmers and wildlife to survive together.

After lunch, the afternoon leads us into the wild landscapes themselves. We head into Kaudulla National Park, part of the larger elephant corridor of Sri Lanka’s dry-zone forests. From open jeeps, we travel slowly through grasslands, lakes, and woodland where herds of Sri Lankan elephants – one of the three subspecies of the endangered Asian elephant— often gather. Watching these gentle giants move across the plains in their natural habitat offers a powerful reminder of what conservation efforts are working to protect.

As night settles over the forest, we return to the lodge where the day ends with a peaceful, delicious dinner beneath the quiet sounds of the jungle.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Sunrise hike with a local naturalist on an educational bush walk and birdwatching trail along the surrounding forest, where we’ll learn about this unique ecosystem and the essential resources it provides for the wildlife (including elephants) to make it a vital habitat for them.
  • Learn About Human–Elephant Coexistence – Meet with the leading voice for elephants in the country, advocate Panchali, to understand the challenges facing both rural communities and Sri Lanka’s wild elephants.
  • Insight into Conservation Solutions – Explore innovative community-led initiatives that aim to transform human–elephant conflict into peaceful coexistence through habitat protection, education, and sustainable practices.
  • Jeep Safari in Kaudulla National Park – Venture with the island’s leading elephant advocate into one of Sri Lanka’s key elephant habitats within the dry-zone forest corridor, traveling through grasslands, lakes, and woodland in search of wild elephants.
  • Special vegan feast for dinner while listening to the quiet nighttime sounds of the surrounding wilderness.

Thank you so much, Vegan Travel Asia (VegVoyages), for your latest trip to Sri Lanka. It was an incredible and memorable journey. Sri Lanka has been on my list for some time and I am grateful for the itinerary you constructed so travelers can go there as vegans. From the exquisite tastes of the country’s staple, rice and curry, to the country’s turbulent history, there is so much to learn from such a small island destination. Sri Lanka was my fourth trip with VegVoyages and Zac and Yusi’s commitment to their customers (as well as local causes, customs, and vegan lifestyle) has never wavered. Thank you so much again. Sri Lanka is yet another trip I will never forget.

Day 8 – KANDY

The morning begins in the quiet forests surrounding our jungle lodge. At sunrise, we set out on a gentle birdwatching walk when the forest is at its most alive. Sri Lanka is one of Asia’s richest bird habitats, and the woodland around us fills with color and sound—parakeets gliding overhead, barbets calling from the treetops, and drongos darting between branches as monkeys begin to stir in the canopy.

After breakfast, we leave the forest behind and begin our journey toward Sri Lanka’s central highlands. The road winds through the island’s fertile interior, where the landscape gradually shifts from dry-zone woodland to greener countryside, and eventually to rolling hills and mountains dotted with farms, villages, and spice gardens.

Our first stop is in Matale, a region long known for its spice cultivation and agricultural traditions that have attracted traders for centuries. Here, we visit a local farm and food studio, where we are introduced to regional ingredients and creative vegan interpretations of Sri Lankan cuisine. Lunch showcases the island’s vibrant culinary heritage, rich with spices such as cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and pepper—once highly prized along ancient spice routes.

Nearby, we visit the historic Aluvihare Temple caves, an important site in Buddhist history. It was here, in the 1st century BCE, that monks first committed the Pāli Canon—the sacred scriptures of Theravada Buddhism and the earliest written record of the Buddha’s teachings—to palm leaves. Within these quiet caves, we learn about this remarkable moment and see demonstrations of the traditional technique used to inscribe texts on dried palm leaves.

From Matale, the road climbs steadily into the cool hills of Kandy, the last capital of Sri Lanka’s independent kings. Surrounded by forested mountains and centered around a tranquil lake, Kandy remained unconquered by European colonial powers until the early 19th century, becoming a stronghold of Buddhist learning and artistic tradition.

By late afternoon, we arrive at our historic lakeside residence—a colonial-era mansion with wide verandas and high ceilings—where we settle in and enjoy a flavorful vegan dinner featuring local Kandy specialties.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Sunrise Birdwatching in the Forest – Begin the day with a peaceful morning walk through the jungle, spotting colorful birds such as parakeets, barbets, and drongos while monkeys move through the treetops.
  • Journey into Sri Lanka’s hill country as we travel inland through changing landscapes, as dry-zone forests give way to greener hills, farms, villages, and spice gardens on the way to Matale.
  • Farm and vegan culinary experience in Matale, where we’ll visit a local farm and food production studio to learn about regional ingredients and enjoy a flavorful vegan lunch inspired by Sri Lanka’s historic spice trade.
  • Explore the Aluvihare Temple Caves and learn about the sacred site where Buddhist monks first wrote down the Pāli Canon on palm leaves in the 1st century BCE, with a demonstration of traditional palm-leaf inscription.
  • Special feast for dinner of local Kandy classics and fusion favorites – all veganized just for us.

Day 9 – KANDY

The day begins in Kandy, Sri Lanka’s last royal capital, where misty hills surround a quiet lake, and tradition remains deeply woven into everyday life. After breakfast, we step into one of the city’s most celebrated cultural treasures—the Kandyan dance.

Developed in the royal courts of the Kandyan Kingdom between the 16th and 19th centuries, Kandyan dance is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic classical art forms. Once performed during temple rituals and royal ceremonies, it combines graceful movement, powerful drumming, and expressive storytelling. During our visit with one of the country’s foremost Kandyan dance masters—whose family tradition spans over 14 generations—we’re introduced to the history, symbolism, and techniques behind this mesmerizing art form. There’s even a chance to try a few steps ourselves, offering a glimpse into the skill, balance, and rhythm it requires.

From the dance studio, we step out into the streets of old Kandy for a heritage walk through the city’s historic heart. Once the seat of Kandyan kings who resisted Portuguese and Dutch colonial rule for centuries, Kandy became a center of culture, religion, and learning. Walking through its lively lanes and backstreets reveals a rich tapestry of communities and faiths that continue to shape the city. Along the way, we encounter a Buddhist temple, a Hindu shrine, a mosque, and a Christian church—each reflecting Sri Lanka’s layered cultural diversity.

We pause for a delicious vegan lunch in the old quarter, followed by a visit to a beloved local social enterprise known for its vegan ice cream.

The afternoon unfolds at a relaxed pace. You may return to our heritage hotel to unwind or remain in town to explore at your leisure—wandering through colorful markets, visiting cafés, or simply taking in the easy rhythm of this historic hill city. The evening is free to enjoy as you wish, offering time to rest and recharge before the next chapter of the journey.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Special Taste of Kandy vegan fusion breakfast.
  • Guests of an extraordinary family whose Kandyan dance roots trace back over 14 generations, who will introduce us to this incredible dance (and percussion) form, including teaching us a few of its steps.
  • Discover the history of Kandy as we explore Sri Lanka’s last royal capital, a hill city that remained independent from colonial powers longer than any other kingdom on the island, as we wander through historic streets and lanes while visiting a Buddhist temple, Hindu shrine, mosque, and Christian church that reflect the city’s cultural diversity.
  • Enjoy a flavorful vegan lunch in the old town, followed by a stop for vegan ice cream at a beloved grassroots community initiative.

Day 10 – NUWARA ELIYA & ELLA

The morning begins in Kandy, where cool hill-country air drifts through tree-lined streets as we gather for breakfast before continuing deeper into Sri Lanka’s tea country. Few products are as closely associated with the island as its tea—known around the world as Ceylon Tea—yet behind every cup lies a complex story of landscape, labor, and people.

Our first stop takes us into the hills to visit the Tea Plantation Workers Archive and Museum, a space dedicated to telling the story of Sri Lanka’s tea industry from the perspective of the workers themselves. Tea was introduced during the British colonial period, but it was in the late 19th century—after a devastating coffee blight destroyed the island’s coffee plantations—that tea reshaped the highlands into the rolling estates we see today. Sri Lanka is now one of the world’s leading tea producers, with vast hillsides covered in neatly trimmed tea bushes.

But the story of tea is not only about trade and global commerce. It is also the story of the Tamil plantation communities whose families have worked these estates for generations. Through exhibits, personal accounts, and conversations with those supporting plantation workers today, we gain a deeper understanding of the lives behind one of the world’s most recognized exports—including the challenges and difficult histories that have shaped these communities.

From here, we continue climbing into the cool highlands toward Nuwara Eliya, often called “Little England” for its colonial-era architecture and misty mountain setting. After a delicious vegan lunch in this historic hill station, the journey continues by train along one of the most scenic railway routes in South Asia. The tracks wind through tea estates, cloud forests, and mountain valleys as we make our way toward the hill town of Ella.

Arriving in the late afternoon, we settle into our inn and gather for sunset views over the surrounding hills before enjoying dinner and a quiet evening, preparing for tomorrow’s mountain walk.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Explore the true story behind Ceylon Tea – from the point of view of its workers. Visit the Tea Plantation Workers Archive and Museum to learn about Sri Lanka’s tea industry from the perspective of the plantation workers and the Tamil communities behind it.
  • Journey into the Central Highlands – Travel through misty mountains and rolling tea estates to the historic hill station of Nuwara Eliya, often called “Little England”, for a tasty lunch of local delicacies specially veganized just for us.
  • Scenic train ride to Ella as we experience one of South Asia’s most beautiful railway journeys, winding through tea plantations, cloud forests, and dramatic mountain landscapes.
  • Sunset drinks and snacks in Ella with views over the hills.

Day 11 – POLHENA BEACH

The morning begins in the cool hill air of Ella, a small mountain town perched along the edge of Sri Lanka’s central highlands. After breakfast at our inn, we set out on a scenic walk through the surrounding countryside, where narrow trails wind past tea gardens, forest patches, and open ridgelines. Ella is known for its sweeping views, and as we move through the hills, the landscape opens dramatically – rolling green valleys, distant peaks, and the occasional passing train tracing its slow path through the mountains below. The region’s mild climate and fertile soil have long supported small farms and tea estates, where farmers tend to vegetable plots and tea pickers move through the bushes with practiced rhythm.
Returning to our inn, there is time to freshen up before we have lunch and then say goodbye to the highlands and begin the journey south. The road descends gradually from cool mountain air toward the warmth of Sri Lanka’s southern coast, passing waterfalls, rice fields, and villages that seem to unfold slowly between forested hills. By the afternoon, we’ll reach Polhena Beach, a relaxed stretch of coastline near the southern city of Matara. Protected by a natural reef just offshore, the waters here are calm and clear, creating an ideal habitat for marine life. After settling into our seaside inn, the rhythm of the day shifts once again—from mountain trails to ocean breeze.

As the sun lowers over the Indian Ocean, we gather by the water for sunset views and a conversation with a local marine conservationist and diver. Along this coast, sea turtles, coral reefs, and tropical fish are part of a fragile ecosystem increasingly affected by fishing pressures, pollution, and climate change. Learning about the work being done to protect these waters offers a deeper appreciation of the ocean that stretches before us. The evening closes with a relaxed vegan dinner overlooking the sea, the sky fading into starlight as waves roll gently onto the shore.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Scenic morning hike in Ella, where we’ll walk through tea gardens, forest trails, and ridgelines while enjoying sweeping views across the valleys and mountains of Sri Lanka’s central highlands.
  • Journey from the Highlands to the Coast and a scenic road trip south through changing landscapes of waterfalls, rice fields, and forested hills as the road descends toward the Indian Ocean.
  • Marine conservation talk where we’ll meet a local marine conservationist and diver to learn about sea turtles, coral reefs, and marine life that call this coast their home, and the efforts to protect their fragile coastal ecosystem.
  • Sunset drinks and a seaside vegan dinner under the stars overlooking the ocean.

Vegan Meals Included Today: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner & Drinks

Day 12 – POLHENA BEACH

The day begins with the gentle sound of waves rolling onto the shore. From the veranda of our seaside inn, overlooking the ocean, we gather for breakfast as morning light spreads across the Indian Ocean. Just offshore, a shallow coral reef protects the bay, creating one of the calmest stretches of water along Sri Lanka’s southern coast—an ideal setting to discover the marine life that thrives here.

After breakfast, we meet local marine conservationists who introduce us to the underwater world we’re about to explore. The reef supports a rich diversity of life: colorful reef fish, coral formations, sea cucumbers, and starfish, along with its most famous residents—green sea turtles, often seen grazing peacefully among rocks and seagrass. Alongside learning about the species we may encounter, we also gain insight into ongoing conservation efforts to protect these fragile ecosystems, increasingly under pressure from pollution, climate change, overfishing, and tourism.

Equipped with masks and snorkels, we slip into the warm, clear water and drift slowly over the reef as our guides point out marine life along the way. It’s a calm, immersive experience—watching the subtle rhythms of the reef unfold just beneath the surface.

After returning to shore, we freshen up and gather for lunch before enjoying a relaxed afternoon by the beach. There’s free time to swim, stroll along the sand, or simply rest beneath the shade of palms. Later, we take a short drive to nearby Matara, a historic coastal town where the 17th-century Dutch fort still stands overlooking the Nilwala River and the sea—a reminder of Sri Lanka’s long maritime trading history.

The day ends with a lively Sri Lankan cooking experience. Together, we prepare a selection of local dishes, surrounded by the aromas of spices in the kitchen, before sitting down to share the meal we’ve created—a fitting close to the day by the coast.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Special seaside breakfast with ocean views.
  • Marine life & conservation introduction with local marine conservation enthusiasts, where we’ll learn about coral reefs, sea turtles, and the efforts underway to protect Sri Lanka’s fragile coastal ecosystems.
  • Guided snorkeling on the coral reef as we explore the shallow reef alongside experienced guides while spotting colorful fish, coral formations, and possibly green sea turtles in their natural habitat.
  • Matara heritage visit – exploring the historic Dutch fort in Matara.
  • Sri Lankan cultural culinary experience – an interactive cooking class where we prepare and enjoy traditional Sri Lankan dishes together.

Day 13 – POLHENA BEACH

The morning unfolds gently along Sri Lanka’s southern coast, where the steady rhythm of the Indian Ocean sets an unhurried tone for the day. From the veranda of our seaside inn, we gather for breakfast overlooking the shore as palm trees sway in the warm coastal breeze. This stretch of coastline near Matara has long been part of Sri Lanka’s maritime story—once crossed by traders, merchants, and explorers, and still carrying that sense of quiet movement and connection.

Today is intentionally left open for you to enjoy the coast at your own pace. With the calm, reef-protected waters of Polhena Beach just steps away, there are many ways to spend the day. You might slip into the clear water for a swim or snorkel among tropical fish and sea turtles, take a walk along the sand, enjoy a traditional massage, or browse small local shops and cafés. The southern coast has its own easy rhythm, and today offers the space to simply settle into it.

As the day drifts toward evening, we gather once more by the sea for our farewell dinner. Over the past 13 days, we’ve journeyed from the bustling streets of Colombo to the ancient stupas and living ruins of Anuradhapura, through the cultural heart of Jaffna, the forests and plains near Laksirigama, the sacred caves of Matale, the royal traditions of Kandy, and the misty tea estates of the highlands—before arriving here along the southern shores.

Along the way, we’ve been welcomed by local friends and families, students, artists, home cooks, conservationists, monks, and dance masters, each sharing a part of Sri Lanka’s story. As the moon rises over Polhena Beach, we raise a glass to the journey with refreshing island drinks and a delicious vegan fusion dinner inspired by regional flavors—a final evening together on the Island of Serendib!

Highlights of the Day:

  • Special Taste of Sri Lanka vegan fusion breakfast.
  • Festive farewell dinner party complete with live music and a variety of Sri Lankan vegan fusion dishes – make sure to bring a hearty appetite and thirst, your party shirt, and don’t forget your dancing shoes!
